It was only a few hundred years ago that the institution of marriage was founded on land rights, family names, and anything BUT love.

Concubines, courtesans, and multiple wives were very common place.

Western society empowered women and now they claim monogamy as a right and as a norm. I don't know about India, but I know my history.
